Bumble Bees sponsors new clock in Newport Pagnell

RESIDENTS in Newport Pagnell got the perfect Christmas present when the town’s new clock was finally delivered and hoisted into place on December 20.

The impressive timepiece new been erected in the High Street next to The Dolphin.

The town clock project was made possible thanks to the hard work of councillors and Town Clock Committee members and volunteers who all contributed and helped with fundraising.

The project was granted planning permission in December 2010 after a long process which saw numerous designs entered.

The committee then put the wheels in motion with elements of the structure commissioned and finely tuned before it was finally delivered to the town.

The base for the clock was built by Newport Pagnell Construction which completed the work free of charge.

A date for the official unveiling has yet to be finalised but Councillor Douglas McCall, who represents the Lib Dems in the Newport Pagnell South ward, said: “It was excellent news that the town clock was erected in the High Street. Well done to the Town Clock Committee.

Bumble Bees sign up to the Cycle MK Challenge

Organisations across Milton Keynes are competing from Monday 21 June to Sunday 11 July 2010 to see who can get the most staff cycling for 10 minutes or more.

Bumble Bees have joined the challenge and will be trying to get as many work trips to client sites as possible.

Look out for the Bumble Bees landscaping cyclists with their tools and watering cans in tow.

eFIG member ,Bumble Bees is making all client and site visits either by foot, bike or public transport on 6th June for Environmental Day. Like many other eFIG members they are raising awareness of this international day and looking at ways they can make a difference.
As an interior landscaper, environment is very important to them; their business revolves around making working environments pleasanter and healthier for their clients.
Plants add a wealth of benefits to a workspace helping to keep staff healthier, happier and more satisfied with their jobs. And for the benefit of the company, making employees more focused and productive, creative and better able to problem solve as well as taking less time off sick.
Notably too the plants help to keep everyone calm adding to the benefits on many levels.
Plants work for longer than one day to bring you these benefits too!

World Environment Day was first celebrated in June 1972.
This year’s World-wide theme is bio-diversity. We can protect ourselves, as well all species of animals and plants by becoming more sustainable in our consumption, looking carefully at not destroying natural habitats and how we expand urban areas, at pollution, at deforestation, global warming and being careful not to introduce ‘invasive species’.
Climate change is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity. (UN Convention on Biological Diversity). Approximately 2- - 30 % of plant and animal species assessed so far are likely to be at greater risk of extinction in global average temperatures exceed 1.5-2.5°C. (UN climate panel 2007)
Biodiversity contributes directly or indirectly to many aspects of our well-being, for instance, by providing raw materials and contributing to health. More than 60 per cent of the world's people depend directly on plants for their medicines.

EFIG Technician Award

Mr Tony Allington of Bumble Bees Office Plants recently won Technician Award at our annual EFIG (The European Federation of Interior Landscaping Groups) Awards Dinner held at Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens. Tony has certainly earned this award with his dedication and loyalty to his job. He even checks in on his plants on his days off.
He is also our greenest employee as he walks to most of his contracts based in Central Milton Keynes. On visiting his London Contracts he can often be seen with a large plant on his lap on the train.
It is during these times of recession that Businesses should be thankful to their best employees who are prepared to do that little bit more.

Royal Botanic Gardens hits 10 per cent in quest to collect seeds of world's plants.
The Yunnan banana, Musa itinerans, found in Asia from China to India, is the 24,200th species to be conserved for Kew's Millennium Seed Bank.
A pink banana marks a milestone as Kew Gardens celebrates collecting the seeds of 10 per cent of the world's wild plants.
The banana in question, the Yunnan banana, Musa itinerans, found in Asia from China to India, is the 24,200th species to be conserved for Kew's Millennium Seed Bank, and as such denotes the 10 per cent mark in Kew's mammoth task of collecting and preserving the world's wild seeds, which it took up in 2000.
It is 24,200 down and 217,800 to go in what is perhaps the most ambitious botanical project anywhere – that of fending off the multiple threats of extinction hanging over the flowering plants of the world, of which 70 per cent are now at risk.

Artificial Trees to cut carbon

Engineers say a forest of 100,000 "artificial trees" could be deployed within 10 to 20 years to help soak up the world's carbon emissions.

The trees are among three geo-engineering ideas highlighted as practical in a new report.

The authors from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers say that without geo-engineering it will be impossible to avoid dangerous climate change.

The report includes a 100-year roadmap to "decarbonise" the global economy.

No silver bullet

Launching the report, lead author Dr Tim Fox said geo-engineering should not be viewed as a "silver bullet" that could combat climate change in isolation.

He told BBC News it should be used in conjunction with efforts to reduce carbon emissions and to adapt to the effects of climate change.

Many climate scientists calculate that the world has only a few decades to reduce emissions before there is so much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that a dangerous rise in global temperature is inevitable.
